St. Jude Fundraiser Update

After some weather related delays; the middle school students and facualty finally had the opportunity to attend an assembly to kickoff the Tyle Hanson Fundraiser.  This fundraiser is to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  During the assembly the students viewed a Power Point presentation that spelled out specific fundraiser information and a video created by Tyler Hanson’s dad.  The fundraiser information can be found in our previous post and in the packet that was given to the students.  The video gave the students a bit of history behind St. Jude and took them through a day with Tyler.

A surprise for the students came at the end of the assembly when they were challanged to raise $20,000.00 dollars as a middle school.  If they can reach this goal Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Hayes, Mrs. Cusick, Mrs. McFarren, Mrs. Whitaker, and Mrs. Cavanaugh will have their hair cut short (pixie cut).  Not to be out done Mr. Matthies, Mr. Mayer, and Mr. Mounce informed students that the grade level which rasies the most pledges would have first choice in shaving one of their heads! This hair cut will be given by the student in each grade level who individually raises the most pledges.  The grade level that raises the second most would have the next choice and so on.

The students were encouraged to take a fundraiser packet as the left the assembly and it was exciting to find out that we ran out!  More packets are now available in the Middle School Office.  Please note that the contracts are due back in the Middle School Office by Wednesday, February 11th.  This is a change from the date previously listed on the contract.  Any male student not participating in the fundraiser will need a hair cut by this same date, February 11th.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact us.  We can be reached at either 244–3225, ext.1008 / 1305 or at mthomas@christianacademyschools.org / gmounce@christianacademyschools.org .

Fundraiser for Tyler Hanson to benefit St. Jude

As many of you are aware, the English Station Campus Middle School is doing a fundraiser on behalf of Tyler Hanson and his family.  At the Hanson’s request, we are raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by encouraging the students (and their parents) to solicit pledges for having their hair shaved, cut, or donated.

We briefly shared a general perspective of the fundraiser with the students prior to Christmas break.  Below we would like to share more specifically with you so that you can help your student in making a decision regarding their participation in the fundraiser.  We pray that your student(s) will participate, especially because this is a great opportunity for them to learn about sacrificing one’s self for another.  We would also like to encourage you to consider participating in this fundraiser with your child.  Also, if you are a hair stylist and would like to donate your time for this event please let us know.

·         Funds raised will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on behalf of Tyler Hanson and family.

·         Funds will be raised by students through collecting pledges for having their hair shaved, cut or donated.

·         Boys will be allowed to grow their hair until April 6th, 2009; at which time they will have it shaved off (# 3

guard or less) during an assembly at school.

·         Girls will be able to do one of the following:

o        Have their hair shaved.

o        Have their hair cut very short (pixie cut).

§ Hair will need to be cut (at your expense) the weekend prior to Monday, April 6th, 2009.

o        Have an 8 inch length of their hair donated (needs to have at least a 6 inch ponytail now).

§ Hair (pony tail) will be cut during an assembly at school – Monday, April 6th, 2009.

§ Must see Mrs. Hayes for additional guidelines.

§ Hair to be donated to Beautiful Lengths: an organization sponsored by Pantene.

·         Any student that does not want to cut their hair may raise pledges for another student.

·         Any male student not participating will need a hair cut by Wednesday, February 11th, 2009.

·         Once all pledges have been collected they should be turned into the Middle School office by

        Wednesday, April 15th, 2009.

We have an opportunity as a school to continue to show care and compassion toward the Hanson family, as well as the many families that are reached by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Please encourage your student to participate in some way and know that you are welcome to join them by participating as well.  Attached you will find a fundraiser contract, we are asking for your signature along with that of your student.  It will serve as an indication of your willingness to allow your son or daughter to participate in the fundraiser.  Please sign and return the contract by Thursday, February 5th, 2009.  Again, any male student not participating in the fundraiser will need a hair cut based on school guidelines by Wednesday, February 11th, 2009.  If you get the chance check out Tyler’s lastes video: A Day In The Life of Tyler Hanson .

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.  We can be reached at either

Special Jeans Day

As many of you may know most of what I do each day is centered on overseeing the discipline in the Middle School.  Now I am fully aware that most of the time your student(s) would prefer not to be called to my office.  I understand that; it is just the nature of the job.  But because they are, that means I am blessed to talk with your student(s) about the various aspects surrounding the choices they make.  As well, this often provides me the opportunity to share with your student(s), from a biblical perspective, regarding those choices.  There are two downsides to this part of my job.  I end up only dealing with a small percentage of the student-body and I am continually responding to the negative issues.

In order to change things around, as it relates to those two areas, I want to offer a special jeans day to all students that did not receive a log entry during the 1st quarter.  They will have the opportunity to wear jeans on Tuesday, 12/16.  The purpose is to reinforce the positive; those students not receiving log entries.  The students will be given a coupon in homeroom this week that they will turn in, on the above date, to their HR teachers.  As well, a list of those students will be given to each teacher.

There may be some concern from students that they were overlooked.  Some may feel it is not fair for them to be excluded.  Please know that we strive to be fair, consistent, and as accurate as possible.  We have done a good job at this as it relates to consequences, on the other hand we have not done a good job as it relates to positive reinforcement; thus the special jeans day.  Overall, your students do well in following the standards placed before them.  You are to be congratulated and your students as well, for receiving this honor.  Thank you for allowing us to partner with you in the education of your student(s).

Please note that your student(s) will again have the opportunity to participate in a special jeans day during the 3rd and 4th quarters of this school year.
